Our HEALING Approach.

Hummingbird Cancer Support Group (Hummingbird CSG) is represented by the image of a hummingbird. We feel it helps us identify our H.E.A.L.I.N.G approach.

Help and Support

When you are diagnosed it can be challenging to establish what your priorities are, which treatments you should choose and which appointments you are attending. Hummingbird CSG can help you talk through the 5 W’s: WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN and if you want to, the WHY?

Endurance and Energy

Hummingbird CSG will help you to keep going, we will help keep you focused, give you the opportunity to take time out and talk to likeminded people. We also provide a sanctuary for relaxation through complementary therapies.

Adaptable

We encourage you to be adaptable in your life, look for people that can help you, make changes and look for signposts to further support.

Local Support

We are a local support group, based in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire. All our volunteers live and work locally and we have working relationships with the hospitals and surgeries in this area and surrounding villages.

Independence and Integrity

It is important during this time to maintain some sort of independence. We won’t tell you what treatment to choose or what not to do, but we are happy to listen and help you establish the best course of action for you. We will respect you, advise within our capabilities and knowledge, be honest with you and ultimately uphold the moral principles of our group.

Nourishing and Nurturing

Nurturing is about caring for the people that visit our group, ensuring that we provide encouragement and support alongside your treatment. We will help nourish you through our provision of physical complementary therapies, mental and social support. This provides you with much needed relaxation, space to talk to others, opportunity to seek reassurance, ask questions, and possibly find buddies so you aren’t alone.

Gratitude and Giving

The 3 parts of gratitude can be felt at Hummingbird CSG. The first reminds us to be grateful for what we have in our life; the second part is expressing gratitude to people who have made our life better and the third is about adopting behaviours within our whole life to achieve a greater appreciation for life. The final part is giving. All of volunteers give their time freely to be able to offer this wonderful support group in Bishops Stortford. It is also possible that you may be able to give support a new member who arrives having received a diagnosis of cancer.

Hummingbirds are spiritual messengers. They remind us to slow down and enjoy life. They help us eliminate the negative thoughts and adapt our lifestyles to ensure we live in the moment. Sometimes when you receive news of conditions such as cancer it’s important to stop, take your time, rest, and heal.

  • Hummingbirds fly long distances. This is a reminder to persevere
